In our web presentation, we have tried to show that Mandarin has
marginalized dialects such as Hokkien and Teochew to a very great extent. Although this is a proven fact on the societal level,
we have also identified individual cases where this may be less prevalent.
Our survey goes some way to illustrate our stand. It is pertinent to note that the survey does
not represent the opinions of all Singaporeans. We have only targetted Singaporeans belonging to our generation and later,
hopefully to hypothesize the future scenario of dialects.
With special emphasis on Diagram 3 (Some useful data), we are certain that the future of dialects like Teochew and Hokkien is exceedingly bleak. This is no exaggeration,
for the results suggest that future generations of Primary One students would not reverse the declining trend.
In sum, we hope to have elucidated the situation of the local dialects, especially Hokkien
and Teochew. It has been a pleasure bringing this to you, do send us an email if you have any comments.
